Training and Education Offered by Internship

Please describe your objective in training Predoctoral interms. Please include a brief description of your training program and how it fits within the goals or mission of your agency:

Predoctoral Interns in the Wellness Counseling Center track and California College of the Arts track will train together at CIIS. Interns in the Wellness Counseling Center track will serve the CIIS student population. This service is provided for all CIIS students (other than PsyD students) as part of the university student services. Interns in the CCA track will serve CCA's student population. Predoctoral Interns will have completed classes and will have the level of training and clinical experience to work with undergraduate and graduate level students from a variety of academic disciplines, including clinical and counseling programs (MA level) within CIIS. This internship will enable Predoctoral Interns to practice from the relational psychodynamic theoretical framework in which they have been trained in the PsyD program. Interns will also learn how to provide brief psychodynamic psychotherapy. Additionally this internship will give them the opportunity to offer needed services to the greater Institute community of which they are a part. Interns and fellows will participate in one to two weekly didactic training seminars. Training topics may include: Brief Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Theory and Technique, Jungian Psychoanalysis, Liberation Psychology, Attachment in the Clinical Setting, Couples Therapy, Group Therapy, Multiculturalism and Diversity, Professional Development, and Supervision of Supervision. In addition, interns will participate in a weekly case conference. Multicultural training is emphasized throughout the didactic and supervisory experiences.

If applicable, describe in detail how the internship training differs from practicum training:

Interns will see students/clients in a short-term model and will be asked to assess and intervene using short-term dynamic techniques rather than the longer term model used in our practicum training. They will need to utilize more acute diagnostic and triage skills and be able to articulate their work (services) to the entire CIIS community as part of the Wellness services engagement within the Institute. Interns will need to be able to work with faculty and staff of the Institute to liaison and coordinate care.
