Located in Los Angeles County, BHC Alhambra Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital part of the Universal Health Services Behavioral Hospital System, has been a community resource for behavioral health and substance abuse treatment for over 60 years. Our 95-bed, acute-care facility offers comfort, confidentiality and cutting-edge treatment programs for ages 4 through adult. Inpatient day treatment and Twenty-four hours a day and 7 days a week confidential assessments with a counselor are available at no cost. Del Amo Hospital is located in Torrance, CA and is a 160 bed psychiatric hospital serving pediatric, adolescents and adults. Programs: 1. Adult Acute Inpatient: The program focus of this unit is to curtail dysfunctional symptoms and establish a level of safety for the patient to be discharged to a less restrictive level of care, i.e. partial hospitalization, outpatient, etc. The age range is from 18 and up. Examples of training opportunities include: co-leading and leading groups, individual crisis intervention, family therapy, and treatment planning. 2. Youth Services Acute Inpatient: The program focus of this unit is to curtail dysfunctional symptoms and establish a level of safety for the patient to be discharged to a less restrictive level of care, i.e. partial hospitalization, outpatient, residential care, etc. The unit is divided into two separate units, pediatrics (4 to 13 years of age) and adolescents (14 to 17 years of age). Examples of training opportunities include: co-leading and leading groups, individual crisis intervention, family therapy and treatment planning. 3. Intensive Outpatient: The program focus is to provide a transition period between inpatient and outpatient treatment to assist the patient in learning coping skills so as prevent regression and/or relapse. The age range is from 18 and up. Patients in this program are either persistently mental ill with a recent history of declining functioning and/or exacerbation of symptoms or in transition.

Population

Demographic composition of patients reflects the population of Los Angeles County. Diagnostically patients are in the acute stage of mental illnesses, danger to self and other, gravely disabled (meeting criteria for involuntary hospitalization 51/50).

Training and Education Offered

Practice with the highest legal and ethical standards. Knowledge, understanding and application of the most effective evidence based clinical interventions taking into account the uniqueness of human diversity in working with patients. Enhancing professionalism and understanding of professional roles. Working knowledge of the DSM system and demonstrate the ability to select appropriate interventions based upon patient diagnosis, developmental level and acuity. Using psychological assessment to address diagnosed questions to arrive at a diagnosis and guide treatment. Focus on rapid stabilization/crisis intervention for inpatients. Understand the role of psychiatric hospitalization and partial hospitalization i the continuum of psychiatric care. Effectively understand and use the resources of our multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

This training site is an excellent opportunity for graduate students in psychology to learn about sever psychiatric disorders, traumatic stress and learn skills of rapid stabilization and brief focused treatment. The majority of treatment is group psychotherapy and psychoeducation. There are opportunities to render individual & family discharge planning sessions focused on helping patients in understanding their triggers, symptoms, learning healthy coping skills and establishing social support as well as motivating them in following up with outpatient services. Interns will learn to assess for chemical dependency as well as learning the relationship between addictions and psychiatric disorders. Trainees participate in multi-disciplinary case conference & treatment planning and milieu therapy. Psychological Assessment (Testing) is limited at this site to screening for mental disorders or identifying severity of mental illness. 1. INPATIENT PROGRAM A.
