Saturday Center for Psychotherapy

(310) 829-7997

Agency Description

The Saturday Center is a small agency with six to eight interns and seven to nine supervisors, and provides individual, couples and group psychotherapy to a general out patient population with a wide range of diagnoses, including relationship problems, anxiety, mood and eating disorders, and various Axis II diagnoses. Training is based on private practice, analytically oriented model. Interns carry a full share of responsibility for making the office run smoothly, and are involved in various business and administrative aspects of running a private practice. Each intern's counter transference responses evoked in their work with their clients are discussed by supervisors and group leaders (during regular supervisory meetings) in terms of their impact on the intern's ability to engage clients in a therapeutic process. Graduates of the two year program have a sound understanding of the art of psychotherapy and have a general knowledge of the business aspects of having a private practice. They are encouraged to continue seeing their clients at the end of their training.

Agency Mission

The Saturday Center's goal is to provide low fee therapy to the Santa Monica community as well as a training program for Psychologists and Marriage and Family Therapists.

Population

The Saturday Center serves general outpatient population with wide range of diagnoses, including relationship problems, anxiety, mood, and eating disorders, and various personality disorders.

Training and Education Offered

Interns receive a minimum of 2 hours/wk of individual supervision, a 1.5 hr/wk supervision group, a 1.5 hr/wk reading/didactic group and a 1.5 hr/wk process group. All supervision focuses on the transference/countertransference relationship, with particular focus on how that relationship is brought into the supervision in the form of "parallel process." The agency takes an "intersubjective" apporach to treatment and thus views the client/therapist relationship as the factor of change in psychotherapy. As a result, much focus is placed in supervision on the character issues of the interns and how those traits affect the therapeutic work positively or negatively. After the one-year internship is completed, our interns will have the opportunity to continue for an additional year, towards post-doc requirements, should they be invited to do so. As a Psychological Assistant, our trainees earn a percentage of their patients' fees.
