Additional supervision and training for assessment/psychological testing: Yes

Describe the assessment training:

Interns are expected to have basic training in cognitive, personality and psychopathology, and diagnostic assessment prior to starting internship. Training in psychological assessment is limited to brief screening, risk assessment and safety plan performed during a Psychosocial Assessment of the patient. Training is through didactic sessions and individual supervision. Brief Screening Interns conduct brief screening measures as part of the Psychosocial Assessment. Typically, referrals for brief screenings are to answer specific and targeted clinical questions (e.g., presence of trauma symptoms, severity of drug or alcohol use, risk for self-harm, presence or absence of cognitive impairment). Interns receive training in the use of brief screening instruments (e.g., Trauma Symptom Inventory-TSI-II; Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventor-SASSI; Montreal Cognitive Assessment- MoCA; Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test-K-BIT,), with a specific emphasis on translating the results into actionable feedback and recommendations for the treatment team. The process for brief screenings is identical to assessment batteries, including oversight by a licensed psychologist, with the exception that there may not need to be a referring clinician and the report is in a brief, 1-2-page format. Psychosocial Assessment Interns will be assigned to conduct Psychosocial Assessment on patients admitted to the hospital within 72 hours of admission. The psychosocial assessment is a part of the evaluation of the patient’s current and past functioning; identifying strengths to build on and liabilities which could be barriers to recovery. It provides a history and perspective of the patients and the impact of their mental illness on functioning and relationships. This assessment assists the treatment team in understanding possible present and future functioning of the patient and their support system. It is a part of treatment planning and identifies actions for discharge of the patient to a less restrictive level of care.
