Required/Desired Experience (e.g., specific populations, testing, etc):

A minimum of one year of supervised experience providing ongoing counseling sessions to six individuals is required; experience providing ongoing counseling sessions to adults is strongly preferred. Due to Sonoma County's large LatinX community, multi-lingual applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Letter of intent content (submitted to CAPIC as part of the complete student application to internship):

Applicants should describe their interest in working at Lomi in terms of the population we serve and why they are interested in the specific focus of our agency. If applicants have a background in Mindfulness and Somatic training or experiences, this should be described. Applicants should discuss the experience they have had working in the counselor role, the types of clients they have worked with, the number of clients they've seen in ongoing counseling sessions, and how this experience has prepared them for the internship at Lomi. We would be interested in knowing about specific areas of training or personal experiences that the applicant draws upon when working with clients; current goals for personal or professional development; and a description of how the applicant sees him/herself working within a community of interns, supervisors, and staff.

Please briefly describe the clinical and educational experience necessary to be considered for acceptance into your training program:

Interns are required to have at least one year of supervised experience working in a clinical setting providing ongoing therapy sessions with a number of clients, which includes older adolescents and adults.

Describe the interview process for your agency (individual or group interview, role playing required, case presentation required, etc):

Applicants selected for an interview will meet with any combination of the following: Director of Doctoral Intern Program, Clinical Director, Executive Director, and/or other staff members. Brief presentations of case examples or other experiences working with clients is expected. Applicants should be prepared to discuss the work they have done with clients, their strengths and areas for growth, the approaches they draw from when working with clients, and the types of issues they encounter in the therapist role. Applicants will be asked to participate in a short role-play exercise to demonstrate how they would work with a client during an initial session.

Describe what you are looking for in an applicant:

We look for individuals who are motivated to develop personally and professionally; who can reflect upon their experience and are aware of their impact on others; and who are able to fit well in a nonhierarchical, noncompetitive, and communicative environment. We expect applicants to be able to demonstrate basic counseling skills during the role play to establish rapport with clients, including how they reflect presence, accurate listening skills, and empathy during an initial counseling session. In addition, applicants should demonstrate risk assessment skills. We are interested in applicants who can describe how they work in the therapist role, what their strengths and challenges are, what they would bring to our internship program, and what they hope to learn. We select applicants who have a clear interest in the specific training program and approach that Lomi offers and can speak to relevant experiences in their professional and personal lives that would make them a good fit for our agency.
