Agency Description

The Behavioral Medicine Department, part of Synovation Medical Group, is dedicated to providing integrated behavioral medicine services within an interdisciplinary format to help patients increase their quality of life. The Behavioral Medicine Department conducts patient evaluations and assessments as well as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and psychoeducation. Additionally, the department conducts neuropsychological evaluations. The department receives referrals from neurologists and psychiatrists for the purposes of evaluation of head injuries, stroke, or memory loss. In addition to providing the above services, the Behavioral Medicine Department operates interdisciplinary pain management programs that bring together multiple modalities of treatment to help chronic pain patients increase their quality of life through increased functionality, increased activities of daily living, increased reliance on self, medication stabilization and reduction, decreasing pain, and decreasing suffering (psychosocial factors affecting medical condition).

Population

The program serves the general population of patients suffering from acute or chronic pain, and the agency receives referrals for patients who have had head injuries, stroke, and/or memory loss. Our patient population includes age ranges of 18+, all ethnicities, and all socio-economic levels.

Training and Education Offered

The main objectives of this internship are to provide a thorough training for students in behavioral medicine and psychological and neuropsychological assessment. The internship trainee will be fulfilling either the requirements of a 2000 hour full-time, or a 1040 hour half-time internship placement. The program will provide the students with 20-40 hours per week of psychological activities that serve directly to enhance the trainee’s ability to later operate independently as an ethical and competent psychologist (evaluations, assessment, individual and group therapy, report writing, and biofeedback). The intern will be working under the supervision of two licensed psychologists and will receive individual and group supervision. The primary supervisor will be available at all times to the trainee, either in the form of direct consultation or via telephone.

Opportunties:

The Behavioral Medicine Department serves a highly diverse population. Students will have multicultural training. Training will also focus on the diverse presentation of chronic pain among different cultures. Supervisors and trainees are sensitive to diversity issues and these will be brought up during supervision.

Translators will be provided for clients with specific language needs.

Responsibilities

Interns, once trained, will be responsible for conducting evaluations and psychometric testing, writing reports, conducting behavioral medicine services such as relaxation training, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, group psychotherapy and psychoeducation. Additionally, interns will be able to administer, score, and interpret various psychological and neuropsychological instruments.

Prerequisites

Required/Desired Experience:

Coursework in: • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy • Assessment including intelligence and personality • Physiological psychology • Recommended: Test construction, Health Psychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology

Brief Description of Requirements:

Interns should have completed, or be close to completing their coursework in the field of psychology from a regionally accredited university.

Interview Process:

The interview will be conducted by Dr. Philip Corrado and Dr. Elizabeth Shouse. It will be an individual interview and may include other program staff. It will consist of 16 structured questions. Applicants will be expected to interpret a WAIS-IV and MMPI-2.

What we are looking for:

Applicants should be self-motivated, willing to learn, and interested in providing the best care possible for their clients. Applicants may need to put in hours beyond that which is required at the site, including reading assignments and learning test administration. The optimal candidate would be willing and eager to do this.
