INTAKE ASSESSMENT: Although we do not provide training in psychological testing, we do train interns how to conduct a thorough bio-psycho-social assessment of a children and adolescents through the use of clinical interview and observation with the child/adolescents and his/her parents/guardians . Intern’s clinical documentation including the mental status exam, diagnosis, modality for treatment, functional and psychological structure, and treatment plan are all reviewed by the individual supervisor. School-based interns are trained to assess and triage all referred cases to determine best treatment intervention and referrals for that student and family. We use several assessment tools, the CANS, MAYSI-2, Trauma Focus CBT screen, and the Outcome and Session Rating Scales. CANS: As part of our training, interns learn to use the Child Adolescent Needs and Strength (CANS) outcome measure with all clients. The CANS is a multi-purpose tool developed for children’s services to support decision making, including level of care and service planning, to facilitate quality improvement initiatives, and to allow for the monitoring outcomes of services. Versions of the CANS are used in all 50 states in child welfare, mental health, juvenile justice, and early intervention applications. We train how to use this assessment tool with the child and family, and how to integrate the CANS into a treatment plan. All supervisors are trained and certified in the CANS. At the start of internship, interns are trained by Pathways staff on this measure, then complete an online test of their knowledge, and are provided with a certificate of completion when they pass the online component. CPSS: Since we use the Trauma-Focused CBT model for trauma cases, interns screen all clients with the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS), as well as with a separate version for the caregiver. During initial training, all interns are shown how to use this screening scale during their assessment process. ORS & SRS: For therapy sessions, we use the Scott Miller Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) and the Session Rating Scale (SRS) with clients and caregivers. We also provide interns with instructions on how to use this self-report measure with their clients. Our agency does NOT conduct Psychological testing.
