The Life Skills Treatment Program provides a therapeutic day program (Monday through Friday) for indiviiduals with developmental disabilities who also have psychiatric illness. The program primarily utilizes a cognitive behavioral approach to teach program participants skillls such as anger management, conflict resolution, money management, friendship-making, etc..Agency Mission
The Life Skills Treatment Program is based on the premise that persons with developmental disabilities and mental illness are entitled to participate as fully as possible in family, school, community and work. Dual diagnosis consumers may suffer from paranoid thoughts, mood swings, disorganized thinking and self- destructive behaviors that severely restrict their options and choices. Many are admitted and re-admitted to psychiatric hospitals. The primary aim of the program is to break this cycle of despair and treatment failure. Predoctoral interns ae responsible for providing individual and group therapy, conducting behavioral observations, writing special incident reports, writing individualized treatment plans, writing progress notes, participating in individual and group supervision, participating in case conferences, treatment meetings, and other educational meetings/lectures.Application Procedures

Interview Process:
Send Vita to Life Skills in advance. Subsequently, applicants are invited to participate in individual interview at program during regular hours. Applicants are asked to discuss issues such as reasons for their interest in training at Life Skills Treatment Program, past training experiences, and future goals. Applicants are given the opportunity to meet the clients, staff and current psychology trainees and to observe the day program in operation.What we are looking for:
Life Skills is seeking interns who are interested in improving their knowledge and clinical skills related to individuals who have a developmental disability (such as autism) and mental illness. Interns need to be willing to work closely with a population that is very challenging, but also very rewarding.Additional application docs required (if any)
