Agency Description

WILA is a socially conscious nonprofit serving the diverse communities of Los Angeles by providing high quality psychotherapy to those otherwise unable to afford long-term psychological care. We see adults 18+ in long-term individual, couple, adult family, and group therapy. Our primary theoretical orientation is psychodynamic, however, we maintain a flexible approach to working with each person who comes to our clinic.

Agency Mission

WILA is at the forefront of a therapy movement, changing the ways people are treated when they need help but are held back by financial, cultural and systemic barriers. WILA serves the diverse communities of Los Angeles by providing affordable high-quality psychotherapy services while training the next generation of socially conscious mental health professionals.

Population

The clients who come to our clinic reflect the broad spectrum of cultural and ethnic diversity of the Los Angeles community. Most are financially struggling members of the working and middle class. We only see adults 18+ but we see a full spectrum of ages. 10% of clinic population are seen as couples or in adult family therapy.

Prerequisites

Required/Desired Experience:

We work from a modern socially conscious model while integrating psychodynamic theory with whatever works in the room to help your client! We're most interested in making a good match and finding students with a true desire to conduct long-term psychotherapy. We consider it a real bonus if you have had a practicum experience involving ongoing therapy, and if you've been in your own therapy yourself, but these are not required.

Brief Description of Requirements:

Since the focus of the internship is the conduct of psychotherapy, applicants should have educational and clinical experience as well as a strong interest in this area of practice.

Application Procedures

1) Complete the CAPIC Application. 2) We will reach out to schedule a personal interview. 3) Complete CAPIC rankings. 4) We'll confirm matches and start date after CAPIC Match day. We encourage all students to call and speak to one of our current interns about the experience of being an intern at WILA. To do so, call Rocio at (424) 371-5191 x100 or email rocio@wila.org

Interview Process:

We conduct a 30-45 min personal interview. You will likely meet with our Executive Director, Dr. Michele Gomes and Clinical Director, Dr. Claudia Feldman. The interview is unstructured and you do not need to prepare a case presentation, a role play, or thorough vignettes of your work. Our aim is to give all parties a sense of the match between the applicant and the program. We will ask questions to get to know you and invite you to do the same.

What we are looking for:

Curiosity, desire to learn, a strong interest in long-term deep psychotherapy, a socially conscious heart and mind, hard working, committed to helping. Ours is a robust training program so students who are ready to dive in do well here.

Additional application docs required (if any)

  • Transcripts - Graduate
  • Other - COVER LETTER: Please write an individualized cover letter addressed to Dr. Michele Gomes describing (1) What your goals are for your training year, (2) How you think WILA would be a good fit for your training needs.

Other information:

NOTE ABOUT START DATE: We have two start dates for our internship - July 1st and October 1st. Applicants will be asked to rank order their preference, though it is not guaranteed until the week after matches are confirmed. We understand that you may not be able to start 7/1 if you are committed to a practicum site. Your start date preference has no influence on your chances of getting in.

Additional Comments

We really enjoy this process and want to genuinely begin to get to know you. Of course interviews are always anxiety provoking, but we hope you will be able to be yourself and let your personality shine through in addition to your professional preparedness!
