Training and Education Offered by Internship
Please describe your objective in training Predoctoral interms. Please include a brief description of your training program and how it fits within the goals or mission of your agency:
The mission of EBWS is to enhance the quality of life, and preserve the dignity of:
a) Elderly and
b) Adults suffering from chronic physical conditions
residing in Short-Term or Post-Acute settings, or Long-Term residential care settings, or at home,
through providing on-site supportive/psychotherapeutic services (evaluations, neuro/psychological assessments and psychotherapy).
The internship is designed to expand the interns’ knowledge and experience with this population. Residential care settings provide a wealth of clinical cues and information that the interns can learn to utilize and incorporate in psychotherapy. Furthermore, providing psychological services in these settings requires the constant interaction with nursing staff, medical doctors, social workers and frequently family members. This constitutes a unique opportunity for interns that are interested in expanding past the traditional model of conducting psychotherapy in a private practice setting. Interns, along with their supervisors, will coordinate care of the patients with other health professionals, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life of these individuals. Interns will have opportunities to apply their clinical skills while providing supervised psychological services such as psychotherapy and psychological testing to clients in a variety of settings.
If applicable, describe in detail how the internship training differs from practicum training:
Training includes training in multicultural competence, geropsychology, health psychology, and clinical theories and interventions. Additionally, training includes training on business development, non-profit organization development, community outreach and management of volunteer services.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS OF PREDOCTORAL INTERNS:
1. Supervision: Part-time interns will engage weekly in a minimum of one hour of individual supervision and two hours of didactic training meetings, whereas full-time interns will engage in 2 hours of individual supervision and 4 hours of didactic training meetings. Full-time interns will also participate and assist in projects that promote the development of the agency (presentations in community settings, grant writing, etc) as needed and requested by the agency. All interns will participate in two hours of group supervision.
2. Presentations and case conferences: Interns will be asked to prepare presentations to deliver in the context of the weekly didactic training. Students will also be asked to present or participate in case conferences.
3. In-service meetings: Interns may be asked to participate in in-service meetings as they occur, at the facilities where they will be delivering psychological services. In-service meetings aim at training health providers from various disciplines on mental health related topics. These trainings also aim at helping health providers consider their clients' mental health needs when developing treatment plans.
4. Proper Documentation & Timeliness are extremely important with regards to any and all given assignments and progress reports/notes: Interns will be responsible for the appropriate documentation of their psychotherapy and assessment sessions with the patients weekly. The interns' evaluation will largely depend on this.
