Training and Education Offered by Internship

Please describe your objective in training Predoctoral interms. Please include a brief description of your training program and how it fits within the goals or mission of your agency:

Interns add freshness and enthusiasm to the work they do and infuse the staff with their energy. They allow the clinic to expand services to the population by offering individual and group counseling. Interns have the opportunity to gain clinical skills through observing licensed clinicians including psychiatrists, nursing staff, PhD's, and other licensed clinicians. They will also get experience with electronic health records, writing progress notes, doing full psycho-social assessments, reviewing and analyzing history, triaging for severity and appropriate level of care, developing and making referrals to community resources and participating in peer lead activities. Supervision in a group and/or individual setting helps the intern process their experience and hone their clinical skills. Our agency is committed to training the next generation of therapist to serve the community and is proud to have interns of every discipline. Not only does the clinic and the intern benefit but the community and the system as a whole.

If applicable, describe in detail how the internship training differs from practicum training:

Internship students are given more responsibility than practicum students with greater client caseloads. Also, they are given cases sooner, whereas practicum students spend more time observing earlier on.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS OF PREDOCTORAL INTERNS:

See the attached P&P "Documented Due Process describing how North Central Mental Health Center deals with concerns about intern performance."

Comments Regarding Theoretical Orientation of Staff

We work in a multi-disciplinary center where interns can consult not only with licensed staff of all disciplines, but also psychiatric doctors, psych RN, peer support specialist, case-managers, homeless workers and other interns. it is a rich and diverse staffing environment with lot's of opportunities to learn. There could be opportunities for some testing as interest is expressed by the student.
