SCTC is a consortium of smaller non-profit community-based agencies dedicated to the service of low-income, predominantly African-American and Latino populations residing in South Los Angeles. Resources, including financial, educational trainings, office space, assessment tools, etc. are combined through the consortium to provide mental health services to clients, as well as multicultural training to graduate level psychology students.Agency Mission
The South Central Training Consortium, Inc., is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accomplish four main objectives: 1) to work with families and individuals residing in South Los Angeles and surrounding areas, so that they may live happier and more productive lives; 2) to offer future mental health professionals the opportunity to learn and provide clinical services to this population; 3) to provide mental health services to clients of other non-profit agencies; and 4) to provide clinical field training sites for graduate psychology programs. SCTC is dedicated to culturally appropriate psychological assessment and treatment of diverse, low-income populations, as well as providing culturally relevant training for future mental health professionals interested in the study of this population. SCTC recognizes that residents reside within communities, and that as community services are enhanced, so are the lives of its residents. To this end, SCTC's work includes program development, evaluation and community integration.Population
SCTC serves primarily low-income, under served populations of South Los Angeles. The internship program is designed to be student and community centered. From the initial interview, the intern is paired with a primary supervising psychologist who is responsible for integrating the student's strengths into the needs of participating agencies. Through a curriculum of didactic and experiential opportunities, other areas requiring more attention will be strengthened utilizing the necessary supports that augment the training provided by that intern's educational program. Nurturing the intern's gradual transition from student to practitioner, SCTC supervisory staff's objectives are to provide culturally sensitive services in support of the development of culturally competent professionals.X-Cultural Training
Opportunties:
In addition to multicultural training integrated throughout didactic and experiential training, interns will be supervised by psychologists with expertise in working within multicultural urban environments. During the second semester of training, interns will produce a Powerpoint presentation on some cross-cultural aspect of the current client population. Topics have included: obesity in the African-American community, female circumcision, religion and therapy, the use of art in treatment, re-parenting group process, children and anger management, Armenian, African-American and Latina women and sexual abuse, and development of programs.Language(s) staff can use in the delivery of clinical services:

The training process is very team focus. Interns are expected to take on some of the mentoring roles, and if appropriate, peer supervision with the practicum students. Interns are assigned more of the lower-functioning clients and are expected to interface with outside agencies such as medical, case management, courts, etc. Interns also are allowed to serve in the role of consultant and program developer and evaluator for those agencies seeking that level of service. Interns might lead agency staff meetings, conduct trainings to staff, etc.Prerequisites
Brief Description of Requirements:
The consortium supervising psychologists expect students to have completed two years of full-time coursework in clinical psychology, including courses in psychopathology, clinical interviewing, cognitive, affective, social and biological bases of behavior, diversity/multicultural psychology, test construction, measurement theory, and psychological assessment, basic interventions (cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, or familial, etc.) as well as statistics and research design. Students should have also completed a full practicum training experience in addition to other clinical experiences.Application Procedures
Students seeking an internship must first get approval from their academic program. Students apply to CAPIC, indicating their interest in SCTC.The academic program should email or send a list of prospective interns interested in applying to SCTC during the CAPIC interviewing process. Students will be contacted and notified as to the location and date of the interview. Interns are required to submit CAPIC application to SCTC via email. Students are notified if they are not being considered for placement at SCTC. A rank ordering of successful students will be sent to CAPIC.
