Agency Description:

Home Start is a family-based service agency that provides therapeutic and case management services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect. Services provided are home-based, school-based, and clinic-based therapy, psychological testing, parent education, and case management services such as connecting to community resources and other support systems. There is an office based clinic with a sliding fee scale that offers treatment for a wide-range of psychological disorders in children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Home Start utilizes and trains the interns in evidence-based treatment practices including Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). The majority of services are provided in the clients home and school as means to reduce the barriers that under served clients face.

Agency Mission:

Our vision is for every child to have a safe, stable, and nurturing home. To effectively prevent and treat child abuse, Home Start addresses the conditions that can contribute to risky or abusive situations – poverty, unsafe neighborhoods, lack of affordable housing, and unemployment – while concurrently addressing individual self-sufficiency and emotional needs. Guided by our mission to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities, Home Start, Inc., a non-profit child abuse prevention, and treatment agency has strengthened and developed San Diego’s families and communities since 1972.

Theoretical Orientation(s) of Staff:

Bio-psychosocial, Cognitive behavioral, Family Systems, Humanistic/Existential, Integrative, Jungian, Narrative, Other: Cross-cultural, Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Transpersonal

Comments Regarding Theoretical Orientation of Staff

Among all clinical supervisors at Home Start, there is extensive experience in the above orientations. The direct service staff also have experience in all of the above orientations. Since the agency is primarily a child abuse prevention and treatment organization, approaches to therapy are evidence-based trauma recovery such as TF-CBT and PCIT.
