Training and Education Offered by Internship

Please describe your objective in training Predoctoral interms. Please include a brief description of your training program and how it fits within the goals or mission of your agency:

The RBHC Psychology Training Program seeks to provide trainees with a broad range of experiences within a locked psychiatric facility and offers positions to first- and second-year practicum and psychology interns. The program extends training positions to post-doctoral students, when available. The goal is to provide the most supportive learning environment possible while encouraging psychology trainees to practice independently within a structured setting. During the training year, trainees are expected to provide one to one individual therapy and group therapy. Opportunities for psychological evaluation are available. The RBHC Psychology Training Program consists of a minimum of three hours of supervision each week; one hour of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision. Additional supervision is provided, as needed. Significant didactic training is also incorporated in the form of formal didactic training, case conferences with program staff and patients, in-services, and in-vivo training. Didactic hours will vary, however a minimum of two per training week will be provided. The trainees will initially be directly observed by licensed psychologist/supervisors while providing individual therapy, group therapy sessions and assessments. Trainees will also have opportunities to observe supervisor sessions with clients to observe patient/clinician intervention and assessments. As the training program progresses, trainees are expected to professionally function more autonomously. Each Intern will be evaluated periodically to ensure continued development.

If applicable, describe in detail how the internship training differs from practicum training:

Both practicum and intern trainees are initially provided direct supervision to assess and verify competencies, but are encouraged to perform more independently, with mostly indirect supervision as they progress through the training program. Interns are also encouraged to actively identify opportunities to improve the program offered to patients and take the initiative to implement changes as appropriate. Interns are encouraged to participate more actively as consultants and not just treatment providers. By the conclusion of the training program, interns are expected to act as mentors to the incoming cohort and current practicum student trainees.
